The Bret Harte Elementary School works with the San Francisco School Volunteers organization to coordinate the recruitment, training, and placement of volunteers in the school. There are currently 16 volunteers contributing over 6,000 hours annually in our school. Volunteers from all walks of life - high school student, college students, senior citizens, parents, grandparents and community members, share one common interest - our children.
Volunteers have an opportunity to give of themselves as they help children learn and grow. An integral part of promoting successful schools and confident students, volunteers use their various talents while learning valuable new skills.
Below are a few of the many volunteer opportunities in our school. If you are interested in volunteering for one or more of these opportunities, please contact San Francisco School Volunteers.

Classroom Volunteers
Teachers appreciate the help they receive from volunteers and volunteers are needed all kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms. Classroom volunteers are assigned to one classroom under the supervision of a credentialed teacher and must commit to at least two hours per week. Duties include one-on-one tutoring, small group assistance, preparing materials and much more.
Food Pantry
Bret Harte School is one of 200 SF Food Bank sponsored sites that provide families with fresh produce and other grocery items. Every Tuesday volunteers set up a farmers' market-style distribution that allows parents and other community members to select the foods that best meet their families' needs.
Leaders Read
Volunteers are needed to support the school's Leaders Read program which motivates students to read for pleasure. Leaders Read volunteers collect reading logs, calculate points and maintain bullet board displays.
After-School Program
Volunteers help students after school, assisting in completion of homework assignments and providing extra help in reading or math. Volunteers also provide supervision to after-school recreational activities. Help is needed between 2:30pm and 5:30pm, one or more days a week.
School Gardens
Gardens are thriving at Bret Harte Elementary School and many hands are needed! Volunteers work alongside students to help maintain the gardens, and can also help teachers turn the experience into valuable lessons in science, nutrition and environmental education.
Clerical/General Support
Volunteers can help school staff by answering telephones, filing, collating, entering data - the possibilities are endless! |
